We recently completed the relocation of a mid-size technology company in the Boston central business district and had the opportunity, following the move, to mine some revealing information.
Although overall satisfaction with the move process was extremely high at 95% suggesting minimal impact, conversely business productivity was dramatically impacted day one resulting in 70% lost productivity. This loss significantly improved day two and three resulting in 27% and 19% losses respectively. Gains continued days four, five and six ultimately returning to 100% productivity day seven. The cumulative impact over the first six days suggests a +/-23% loss in productivity. Although advances in technology have significantly reduced or eliminated move related downtime risk, qualitative issues such as general workspace and surrounding neighborhood acclamation and socialization present a noteworthy change management vs. productivity challenge to minimize this impact.
